An Exploratory Study on the Empathy in Nurse-Patient Relationships


Abstract
Nursing is a facilitative interpersonal process in order to help the patient. Nurses as helpers should be supposed to provide patients growth - facilitating support and adequate assistance.
Empathy is an essential ingredient to helper effectiveness: it has long been considered an important concept in nursing. The helping process can either helper harm growth, depending on the level of facilitative skills of the nurse
The purpose of this study were as follows:
1) to test for significant difference in empathic ability in relation to general characteristics of nurses.
2) to test for significant difference in perceived empathy in relation to general characteristics of patients.
3) to investigate the relationship between the nurse¢¥s interactive ¢¥empathy ability and the patient¢¥s perceptionof nurse empathy.
The subjects of this study were 63 adults in - patients who had less acute physical problem and 63 registered nurses working on those wards at Chonbuk National University Hospital in Chonju.
The data was collected from May 17, to May 23, 1989, by the questionaire method.
The instrument for this study was a Korean Empathy Construct Rating Scale, based on Lamonica¢¥s ECRS.
The results gathered were analized by means of statistical methods such as t-test,
ANOVA and Pearson Correlation Coefficient.
The results of the study were as follows:
1. Average empathic level of nurses was 3.770. and average perceived empathy_ of patients was 3.425.
2. The relationship between empathic ability and the nurse¢¥s general characteristic variables showed no significance (P X05).
3. The relationship between perceived empathy and the nurse¢¥s general characteristic variables showed no significance (P X05).
4. The relationship between perceived empathy and the patient¢¥s general characteristic variables showed no significance (P X05).
5. The relationship between nurse interactive empathic ability and the patient¢¥s perception of nurse empathy was negatively correlated (r=.21 53, P < .05).
